Shabbat Shalom!

Presidential Message: Rosh Hashanah, 5766
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/09/20050930.html

I send greetings to all those observing Rosh Hashanah.

On this holy occasion, Jews around the world are called by the sound of the Shofar to gather in celebration of the beginning of the New Year and the creation of all life. For the Jewish people, this marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a special time to reflect on the past year and welcome the year to come.

It is also a time to reflect on the history of the Jewish people, from the days of Abraham to the present, and remember God's faithfulness to them. This year, we mark the completion of an especially joyous occasion, the 350th year of Jewish life in America. Throughout America's history, Jewish Americans have strengthened and enriched the character of our Nation.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a blessed Rosh Hashanah. L'shanah tovah.

George W. Bush

Shabbat Shalom!

Woody Allen once said that 80% of life is just showing up.  To borrow another
hackneyed phrase, this sets the expectation bar very low.  It also reveals that for
some, just showing up is difficult enough.  But, it also asks more important questions.
What about the other 20% of life?  What are we to do with this extra time?

Today, we entrust “Chellie’s Torah Cover”, the FJMC President’s Torah Mantle,
with Bob, the newly elected FJMC President.  This is a fantastic accomplishment
and one in which we are all proud.  In some sense, his election is in recognition of
the other 20% of his life - the part which is not just showing up.

Bob has been a real leader at both this Synagogue and in the FJMC.  He has
served on committees, led committees, served on executive boards, led executive
boards, published electronic newsletters, edited printed newsletters, initiated forums
discussing issues regarding men’s health, compiled and edited works about these
issues, educated and led others in religious and ritual areas, participated in countless
programs and events, and inspired and influenced a great many of us, many who are
here today.

A great Rabbi once asked: “Do you remember who won the Nobel Prize for literature
in 1988; do you remember who won the US Open in 1992; do you remember who
won best supporting actress in 1997; do you remember the most important teachers
that you had?”  Of course, we all know the answer to this question.  We remember
those who influence us.

This past July, I had the pleasure of attending the FJMC convention in Florida where
Bob was elected and installed.  On Saturday, the keynote night, Bob delivered his
address.  I honestly do not remember much about what he talked about, except for
one thing.  Bob first individually identified and thanked all of us who attended from
Temple Shaare Tefilah before continuing with the rest of his speech.  This is how I
know Bob, someone who takes the time to know me.

So, Bob, on behalf of Temple Shaare Tefilah, congratulations on your recent election
as the International President of the FJMC.  I know you will continue to lead and
continue to teach all of us.  Mazel Tov.

Now, for a quick announcement: the Temple Shaare Tefilah Sisterhood opening meeting
is this Wednesday evening, September 21st, at the Temple.  The guest speaker, Lois
Black, a nutritionist, will talk all about cooking food faster and easier just in time for
the holidays.  Members and guests are welcome.  Refreshments served.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you who participated in services today.  Today’s
Kiddush is sponsored by the Temple Shaare Tefilah Brotherhood and is hosted by
Mr. Stuart Zorn.

Shabbat Shalom!

Summer is truly over and it is now fall.  There is no more procrastinating and holding
on to the last rays of summer.  Another school year, another new year, and another
chance to make our lives and the lives around us better than they were in the past.
A time for all of us in our community to work together and to achieve what we can
not individually.

If anyone is looking for ways to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, United Synagogue

They are at it again.  The Somerville Divestment Project (SDP) focuses on grassroots
organizing in Somerville, Massachusetts.  SDP has launched a campaign for a
nonbinding ballot question to divest Somerville Retirement Board Funds
of over
$1.4M from Israel bonds and companies that supply arms and military equipment
to Israel.  The proposed nonbinding ballot question would be voted upon in
November, 2005 in Somerville's municipal elections.  If you would like more
information, contact David Elcott, the director of inter-religious affairs for the
American Jewish Committee.  He can be reached at www.ajc.org.  You can also
contact the Somerville Coalition for Middle East Peace, P.O. Box 563,
Somerville
, MA
or visit their website at http://www.somervilleantidivestment.org/.

Closer to home, on September 17, Dr. Robert Braitman, as newly elected
International President of The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, will be
entrusted with the "Chellie’s Torah Cover", the President’s Torah Mantle
of the FJMC.  The Torah Cover will stay in our synagogue’s ark during
Bob’s two year term of office.  The Brotherhood of Temple Shaare Tefilah
will proudly sponsor the Kiddush in his honor.  Do not miss this wonderful
opportunity to honor Bob for this fantastic accomplishment.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you who participated in services today.
Today’s Kiddush is sponsored by Ms. Zelda Whitestone and is hosted by
Mr. Sam Schawbel.

 Shabbat Shalom!
